Future of farming announcement

by isleofman.com 10th August 2006
The Agriculture Minister will present the findings of a report on the future of farming at the Royal Agricultural Show.

Phil Gawne, who's the chairman of the 2010 Committee, will give two talks at DAFF's tent on Saturday and Sunday at 12.30.

The report suggests initiatives, which are likely to be needed to help sustain the agricultural industry.

The 2010 Committee was set up to plan the future of farming, after the current meat derogation, which allows us to control the prices of meats, ends in 2011.

One of the key conclusions of the report is that focus needs to shift, so farmers are no longer producing what attracted the highest level of government support, but what the market actually needs.

It's also concluded the Meat Plant may require a short term support package because there may be less meat to process in the future.

Minister Phil Gawne says the industry needs to prepare for the inevitable changes in 2011, but says he's confident with a long-term marketing strategy the Island's can thrive.
