Fears of illegal "underclass" in Island

Members of Tynwald who have suggested that greater controls should be brought in to monitor and control " foreign nationals" living or working here have been advised to proceed with caution. The Court heard of fears of an " underclass" operating here and of an inability to accurately assess how many people were here illegally as they did not appear on the Government " screens", by choice. However Chief Minister Donald Gelling said that any "cracking down on the law" should be thought through very carefully:
