Members sought for Communications Commission

by isleofman.com 5th December 2012

Members of the public with an interest in supporting the Isle of Man’s long-term economic development are being urged to apply for a role at the Communications Commission.

The Commission is the Statutory Board which regulates telecommunications and broadcasting under relevant Acts of Tynwald.

It makes a key contribution towards enhancing the Isle of Man’s reputation as a dynamic and diverse jurisdiction, offering world-class telecoms infrastructure and services.

The Council of Ministers is seeking to appoint lay members to the Communications Commission for a period of five years. The time commitment is approximately two days each month and involves regular attendance at Commission meetings, industry liaison visits and other engagements.

Successful candidates will support efforts to maintain a system of regulation that promotes long-term stability while encouraging investment and innovation in communications.

The Commission, which is chaired by the Minister for Home Affairs, recognises the need for leading-edge communications to ensure the Island remains competitive in existing sectors and has the ability to develop new wealth creating industries.

It also aims to protect the sense of community on the Island by ensuring there is an appropriate Manx focus to local broadcasts, through licence conditions and support of the Gaelic Broadcasting Committee.

Licensing and monitoring compliance will continue to be important aspects of the Commission’s day-to-day work, while its primary focus for the coming years will be on modernising the Island’s regulation.

An information pack containing details of the knowledge and skills required for the appointment can be downloaded from the government website at http://www.gov.im/cso/publicappointments/

Application forms can be completed and submitted electronically via the webpage, while printed versions are available from the Chief Secretary’s Office, Bucks Road, Douglas, IM1 3PN, tel: 01624 685711 or email publicappointments@cso.gov.im

The deadline for receipt of applications is 5pm on Monday, December 17.
