A verdict of misadventure has been returned at the inquest into the death of a Manx Grand Prix competitor.

Forty-seven-year-old Trevor Ferguson was contesting the lead of the Supertwin MGP when he hit the bank at The Nook, between Bedstead and Governor's Bridge.

Coroner of Inquests John Needham described Mr Ferguson - who had been a competitor in the MGP since 2006 with 12 finishes to his credit - as a major part of the event.

The accident happened as Mr Ferguson's machine approached the end of the second lap.

He was in second place but was alone on the road.

Conditions were sunny and the roads dry.

A spectator described how he had approached the corner smoothly, and without any issues, travelling at between 50 and 60mph.

A marshal said he saw part of the bike "go out" and the rider and bike head for the bank.

Despite attempts by paramedics to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner offered his condolences to Mr Ferguson's wife and family.

His nephew Dale Farquahar was present at the inquest.

It was said the only two minor defects on his machine, the rear tyre and brakes, could be attributed to the accident.
