Campaigning Baroness impressed by Manx justice system

A well known campaigner against anti social behaviour in the UK has seen for herself how community policing works in the Island.

Baroness Newlove came to prominence in 2007 after her husband Garry was murdered outside their home in Cheshire by a gang of youths high on drugs and alcohol.

She visited last month as a guest of Home Affairs minister Juan Watterson and was introduced to representatives from the Youth Justice Service, Licensing Unit, Probation Service and Victim Support.

Mr Watterson outlined his plans to reform the Manx criminal justice system including more crimes punished by fixed penalties and alternatives to prison. The aim is to make the system faster, simpler and more cost-effective.

Outline proposals will be laid in Tywnald next week.

Speaking on Sunday Opinion today Baroness Newlove suggested restorative justice where victims have a say in sentencing of offenders, also had a place:
