Manx Telecom sponsorship helps Vikings Hockey Club youngsters

by isleofman.com 10th December 2012

Manx Telecom’s sponsorship of Vikings Hockey Club is helping to encourage more youngsters to take up the sport. The club is using funding to expand junior training sessions from one hour per week to two hours per week in order to accommodate the increased number of juniors who have joined the club. Ian Perry, Chairman of Vikings Hockey Club, said:

“The number of juniors wanting to play has increased from around 40 to around 100. This is great for the club and the sport, but in order to accommodate the increased number of players we’ve had to double our pitch time. Of course, this means the cost of hiring pitches has increased and this is why the sponsorship from Manx Telecom is so important because it is helping the future development of the club by allowing us to cater for lots of new junior players. Manx Telecom’s sponsorship is also allowing the club to pay for younger players to play for senior teams in UK competitions. We’re extremely grateful to our sponsors and their funding is helping the club to go from strength to strength.

Manx Telecom has sponsored Vikings Hockey Club since 2010 and funding has been used in recent years to buy stylish new club kit made by Adidas. The club was founded in 1946, the first competitive hockey season after the war. Over the years it has established a reputation as one of the most successful teams in Manx hockey and has also had success competing in UK competitions. Currently the club has three senior men’s and three senior women’s teams, boys and girls junior sides at under-11s and under-13s level, an under-16s mixed team, four senior mixed teams, and a number of indoor sides.

Voirrey Barron, Manx Telecom marketing communications manager, said that the company was proud to sponsor the club and added:

“Vikings Hockey Club has not only a long history of success, but also a history of encouraging people of all ages to take up the sport. We are delighted that our sponsorship is helping the club to encourage more and more young players to take up hockey.”
