Lights sparkle as couple get engaged in glen

by isleofman.com 17th December 2012

It was wet dark and cold, but the Christmas elves, lights and a touch of romance made it a dazzling venue for one Douglas couple.

Known as the hidden gem of Douglas, a dripping Summerhill Glen was the setting for Ben Mason's proposal to his partner Jodi McFarlane, and thanks to the borough council's electrical services section, it proved a walk in the woods she would never forget!

Ben and Jodi enjoyed walking through the glen as children and now take their daughter Mylah to see the much-loved illuminated scenes, which this year have had a major upgrade.

The 28-year old decided it was the perfect setting for his marriage proposal to Jodi and arranged through Douglas councillor Stephen Pitts to have the question 'will you marry me?' projected on a section of the wall in the glen.

One problem though: getting his beloved there! Parking at the glen with the engagement ring in his pocket after a romantic dinner, Ben had to coax Jodi to go for a walk in the pouring rain. But love knows no bounds and grabbing her daughter's mini umbrella, the pair ventured into the wood.

Ben's motives became crystal clean when they arrived at the spot; he went down on one knee, she said yes and a photographer was on hand to capture the moment.

Ben's thanked the council for helping him pull-off the stunt and the couple from Cronk y Berry plan to marry in two or three years time.
