Treasury Minister Eddie Teare MHK says he is looking forward to the Isle of Man continuing to reap the rewards of its partnership with Pinewood Shepperton plc.
A number of exciting projects are in the pipeline for 2013 and beyond, as the company seeks to enhance its position as one of the world’s leading media brands.
As well as hosting Hollywood blockbusters and UK independent films, Pinewood’s facilities are also in demand for a wide range of television and creative projects.
A long-term contract has recently been agreed to broadcast BBC1’s flagship Saturday night National Lottery show from purpose-built studios at Pinewood, starting on 1 January, 2013.
Pinewood’s new facilities will allow for a much larger screen-based set and areas for musical performances and guest interviews, in addition to cutting-edge production, sound and lighting galleries.
Minister Teare said: ‘Pinewood is set to play a part in several joint film productions in the New Year and is also attracting a lot of high-profile TV business, as demonstrated by the tie-up with Camelot and the BBC for the National Lottery programme. It is clear that the company has a very healthy order book and plans for further expansion and growth. Our partnership with Pinewood means the Isle of Man is well placed to benefit from this success, both as a shareholder and through investments made via the Media Development Fund.’
Best known for collaborating on big-budget productions such as the new James Bond film Skyfall and Disney’s upcoming animation Maleficent, Pinewood also provides sound and picture post production, media storage, management and distribution services to film, television and video games clients.
It is involved in the international re-versioning of soundtracks and has renewed a long-term contract with Disney Character Voices International, which deals with translation and dubbing for Disney productions.
Minister Teare said: ‘Our link with Pinewood gives the Isle of Man exposure to the full spectrum of media and wider creative industries. Films are obviously a key part of its core business, but the company is also focused on diversifying into other growth areas and is investing in the future with confidence. This sits well with the Isle of Man Government’s strategy of developing niche sectors to add value to our overall economic offering.’
He added: ‘Growing the Manx economy is at the very heart of Government’s plans and we must continue to be bold and look at new ways of generating business, wealth and employment opportunities. Being innovative and embracing fresh ideas has led to 28 years of unbroken economic growth and I believe that joining forces with an expanding global brand is a positive move for the Island’s future wellbeing.’
