Don't feel lonely plea to elderly

Elderly people on their own over Christmas are being encouraged to pick up the phone if they want to hear a friendly voice.

The Silver Line is a 24-hour befriending and advice freephone service for the Island and will be staffed throughout the festive period.

The number to call - 0800 328 8888.

It won't be someone you know, as calls from the Island are being handled by volunteers in Manchester.

The Silver Line was launched early in December by Childline founder and TV personality Esther Rantzen.

She was prompted to reach out to others after her own experience living alone for the first time.

Esther firmly believes people hide any outward signs they're lonely:
