Salute to 'unsung hero' Wyn Evans on MBE honour

by isleofman.com 31st December 2012

Organisers of the Manx Grand Prix and Southern 100 have congratulated racing stalwart Wynn Evans on being named in the Queen's New Year honours list.

Mrs Evans, competitors' welfare officer to both events, is to receive an MBE.

For more than 30 years she has been the main liaison between race organisers and riders' families, a role in which she has been responsible for passing on news of accidents during racing.

Chairman of the Manx Motorcycle Club Harvey Garton says they're delighted Wyn's services have been recognised in such a way. Mr Garton calls her an unsung hero, who is well respected throughout the whole motorcycling community.

Southern 100 Racing Secretary George Peach says the award is well deserved for Wyn's many years in looking after riders and their families, sometimes in tragic circumstances.

Wyn and her husband Des who has been the chief travelling marshal for many years are also involved with the TT and Wyn is also an officer for Isle of Man centre ACU Benevolent Fund.

Other Islanders honoured this year were Olympic cycling gold medallist Peter Kennaugh with an MBE; outgoing Chief Constable Mike Langdon receives an OBE; and there was a British Empire Medal for Hector Duff who has supported the Island's veterans' community for more than 60 years.
