A delegation from QE11 High School in Peel is flying to Abu Dhabi today (13 Jan) after reaching the finals of the world's most prestigious environmental awards.
The school's entry in the Zayed Future Energy Prize is one of just two in the running for the European schools' award, after beating off competition from almost 600 other schools.
To reach the final QE11's pupil eco-committee outlined its work over several years making pupils aware of green issues like recycling and reducing use of fossil fuels.
The school's entry also contained proposals for a wind turbine on the site, to power the bio mass boiler installed before Christmas. If they win that's what the $100,000 prize cheque will be spent on!
Today head teacher Sue Moore, Life Skills teacher Lesley Sleight and head girl Moira Pain will fly to the emirate where they'll find out on Tuesday if they've won.
The award is named after the founding father of the United Arab Emirates the late Sheikh Zayed, a champion of environmental projects.
