Island school awaits eco prize verdict

QEII High School will find out today if it's won prize money of up to $100,000 at a top global environmental awards in Abu Dhabi.

Head Sue Moore, teacher Lesley Sleight and head girl Moira Pain flew to the emirate at the weekend, after the Peel school reached the finals of the Zayed Future Energy Prize in the European schools section.

QEII's eco committee impressed the judges with its recycling and energy-saving schemes, tree planting, water-saving ideas and big 'tidy-ups'.

Ambitious proposals for a wind turbine to power the biomass boiler installed last year propelled the school to the final..

Before leaving head Sue Moore said getting so far in such a prestigious competition was a huge achievement:
