For Douglas primary school pupils spring will soon be in air after the Council re-launched its daffodil bulb-growing competition.
Douglas Borough Council’s parks section has distributed more than 2,500 daffodil bulbs to 10 primary schools: Anagh Coar, Ballacloan, Ballacottier, Cronk-y-Berry, Fairfield, Manor Park, Scoill yn Jubilee, Scoill Vallajeelt, St Mary’s and Willaston.
The Council also provided planting compost produced at its Ballaughton nursery site and delivered in sterile wheelie bins, together with pots and growing instructions.
Pupils will grow the bulbs at home then bring them to school for judging, expected to take place in March.
To assist with fair judging the bulbs were all of the same variety, ‘Carlton’.
Regeneration and community advisory committee lead member Councillor Stephen Pitts said: ‘The bulb-growing challenge is a fun way to encourage schoolchildren to learn a little about the world of nature and help them acquire some practical horticultural skills and I’m sure the judging panel can look forward to a “blooming good show” in March.’
