Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association going strong in the South

by isleofman.com 18th January 2013

The Port Erin and Port St Mary Branches of Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association would like to thank everyone for their support with their recent fundraising efforts – the Christmas post and the annual quiz.

The Port St Mary Branch has managed to raise a wonderful ?820 from the sale of their annual quiz. This year’s quiz was all about the capitals of the world, with fifty cryptic questions to be answered. The judges have marked the completed quiz sheets received and 67 people managed to get all the answers correct. Thank you to Shoprite who supplied the food hamper prize, which was won Mr & Mrs R C Mylchreest; and thanks to Marks & Spencer who provided a voucher prize, which was won by Colin Youde. The Port St Mary Branch would like to thank everyone who took part and all those who helped sell the quiz sheets.

The members of the Port Erin Branch are resting their feet after another year of delivering Christmas cards around the south of the Island to help raise funds. This is their tenth successive year, where volunteers for the Branch have hand-delivered Christmas cards, for a donation to Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association. This year’s efforts brought in over ?850; which means that over the past ten years the Branch has raised nearly ?5,000 with their Christmas post initiative. Thank you to all those who sent their cards for delivery, and to all the volunteers who helped deliver the cards.

The Branches are now looking ahead to their next fundraising events in the diary – Port Erin Branch have a coffee morning at the Cherry Orchard on Saturday 26th January, 10am; and Port St Mary have a coffee morning on Friday 15th February at the Golf Pavilion, 10am.

Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association use the money raised by the Branches in a variety of ways – the charity is involved in various Island-based initiatives, funding services such the Staywell Cervical Screening Clinic, Psycho-Oncology Counselling Service, and various cancer awareness projects. They also use money raised to fund research into cancer, its treatment and prevention.
