Children and staff of Scoill Vallajeelt will be utilising the skills of a local craftsman to furnish their school with handcrafted furniture for children to use as part of their learning. It is the latest in a series of initiatives that aims to develop learning outdoors to benefit the school’s 200 pupils.
The school community will be joined tomorrow (Wednesday 23rd January) morning by Gavin Carter to carve a ‘Story Teller’s chair’ for use by the children to read and tell their own and other’s stories in the school’s garden area all year round.
‘Looking at different opportunities to engage pupils and make the most of the excellent facilities we have, is vital to the continuing success of Scoill Vallajeelt,’ said Headteacher, Adrian Shorthouse. ‘We are constantly looking at meaningful ways to ensure children recognise and make best use of the outdoors to enhance their learning.’
Teacher and project co-ordinator Ruth Shaw explained: ‘With Gavin’s help, the children will carve a story teller’s chair, to allow them to take the role of story teller in child-initiated learning times and also listen to stories in the outdoors.’
Willow domes are also being planned for the school field, to allow the children to have the experience of creating a living shelter and be able to use the shelters for group outdoor learning experiences.
