Happy New Year to my Blogophiles!
Despite the liberal coating of 'White Stuff' outside Douglas, so far it hasn't done much to prevent me training and I hope that you too are in a similar situation, though it has to be said that due to both me being a wimp and the fact I've had a cold, about half of my sessions have been done inside on the treadmill.
We have two exciting race meetings looming large in the next few weeks, firstly the last round of the 2012/13 Up & Running Winter Walking League 3rd February and secondly, the Ascot Hotel sponsored Manx Open Walks, 2nd March, both at the N.S.C.
Although the former is the end of a series, all are welcome, regardless of age and ability (there are some successful septegenarians and also a good few zippy kids.) Distances are usually from 1k, 2k 3k, 5k through to 10k.
The latter is of course sponsored by our great rivals (my wife and I run The Welbeck Hotel & Restaurant) and has long been one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the athletic calendar. Whilst it could be said that it doesn't have quite the kudos of some of the meetings of the past when British records and World Bests were set and then in more recent times when former World Championships silver medalists, Olive Loughnane & Gillian O'Sullivan were regulars as well as appearances by last year's Olympic 50k 4th placed, Robbie Heffernan, we do still attract some of Ireland's best prospects and it is the last chance for the British elite walkers to gain selection for the prestigious Lugano Cup in Switzerland.
There are very few events where novices who haven't quite developed their techniques are not encouraged to enter but these races are judged very strictly to 'A' race I.A.A.F. standards, so it is probably best to ask one of our coaches whether they think you would be up scratch. (Any of the Racewalking members of Manx Harriers racewalking sub-committee would be willing to advise you.)

However, it is a great opportunity to watch some top class athletes free of charge and the organisers, Manx Harriers are always very grateful, should you be able to provide assistance on the day. Please ring Bridget Kaneen on 497594 if you would like to offer your services.
For the two feet off the ground enthusiasts among you, there is also a 10k running race for boys and girls over the age of 15.
There is an entry form, more information and a history of the event on http://www.manxathletics.com/manxharriers/MHmanxopen.htm#top.
