by isleofman.com 28th January 2013

Despite weather conditions of snow and high winds members of the Isle of Man Law Society gathered for their annual general meeting at the Palace Hotel on Friday January 18th to hear the council's report on the previous year's activities and elect new council members.

Outgoing president Jason Stanley was thanked for his efforts in the previous two years in what had been difficult trading conditions for the profession. New president Kevin O'Riordan, a director of Simcocks Advocates, was elected to head the society and said: ‘I welcome the trust placed in me by my professional colleagues and will do my best to steer the ship through what will undoubtedly be tricky waters. On a more positive note I am delighted at the progress being made by council and our executive team to strengthen our links with government and organisations in this and other jurisdictions for the benefit of the community as a whole while promoting the interests of the profession and this jurisdiction in particular.’

Members also voted in Paul Kerruish of Kerruish Law as vice-president and welcomed new council members Damian Ciappelli, an advocate with AXA, and young advocate Amy Jolly from Kelly Luft Stanley and Ashton as a full voting council member.

The meeting heard reports from the various committee chairmen and received a presentation from the profession's brokers Aon about risk management programmes within the profession.

On completion of business advocates were joined by members of the judiciary for lunch.
