St Mary’s pupils’ work appears in print

Pupils of St Mary’s RC Primary School are excited to see their work in print in a book published by Scholastic Education.

Children and staff of the school in Douglas put together a 369-page collection of stories and poems in just nine days.

The resulting paperback – We Are Writers! – went on sale at a book fair held at the school on Monday. Proud parents can order copies via the school all this week.

Tim Short, Headteacher, explained: ‘230 pupils from Year 1 right through to Year 6 made contributions to the book on all sorts of themes. Some did the work in class and others did it as homework.

‘Class teachers checked the work and then submitted it to our deputy headteacher, Jo Callow, who has put it all together and sent it to the publisher.’

Year six pupil Ciara Bell, 11, won a school competition to design the book’s cover.

‘While we have had to pay for the books to be published, we will sell them onto families and friends, making a small commission,’ Mr Short said. ‘The main motivation hasn’t been fund-raising but is to encourage the children to read and write poems and stories. Nevertheless, any money we raise through sales will be reinvested in the school by buying new books and audio books.
