New plans for Pinewood

by isleofman.com 1st February 2013

Pinewood Studios is bringing forward fresh plans to almost double in size over the next 15 years.

The Buckinghamshire studios – which the Manx government bought a ?12.2 million stake in at the end of last year – says it’s dropping plans to build 1,400 new homes.

Instead, it’ll spend ?200 million on new studios which will allow up to four films at once to be made there.

The company says the investment would create more than 3,000 jobs although it admits the proposals don’t line up with the UK’s policy on greenbelt land.

The facility, which played home to the James Bond and Harry Potter movies, says the plans would bring an extra ?100 million to the UK exchequer.

Last time around, plans to expand were sunk by the inclusion of 16 “streetscapes” that would have been used as outdoor film sets.

The new plans have already been given celebrity backing, with Danny Boyle and Blade Runner director Ridley Scott throwing their weight behind the studio.

Pinewood lodged the plans with Buckinghamshire district council earlier today, a year after Communities Minister Eric Pickles turned down the original development.
