Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club swings into action again with Ryder Cup legend

by isleofman.com 5th February 2013

Golf icon and Ryder Cup legend Bernard Gallacher OBE will be visiting the Isle of Man in April to speak at a black tie dinner.

The Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club is pleased to announce a black tie dinner event with former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher. The event, sponsored by HSBC, will see Bernard speaking of his love of golf and will provide insights and a ‘behind the scenes’ perspective on golf’s biggest tournament.

Described as a ‘sturdy, stocky and a bulldog of a golfer’, Bernard is a battle-hardened player from Bathgate in Scotland and was the original young wonder of the PGA European tour, winning the PGA Championship just two years after turning professional in 1967. In 1969, at the age of just 20, Bernard became the youngest man to represent Great Britain & Ireland in the Ryder Cup up to that time. Between 1974 and 1984 he accumulated an impressive ten wins on the European Tour.

Bernard played in every Ryder Cup between 1969 and 1983, taking over the captaincy in 1991. Unlucky in his first year, Bernard won the Cup as Captain on his third attempt. His calm and collected leadership was vital to the European team’s stunning victory at Oak Hill in New York State. Bernard turned fifty in 1999 and has played on the European Seniors Tour ever since. Following several consistent years, Bernard won in July 2002 at the Mobile Cup held at Stoke Poges.

A charity raffle will yet again be held during the dinner in April, with all funds raised being donated to a local charity to be nominated by sponsors HSBC. At the previous dinner held in January featuring football legend Kevin Keegan, ?1,026 was raised in aid of the charity ‘Friends of Robert Owen House’.

Kevin Cartledge, Senior Manager at HSBC in the Isle of Man, said:

“We are delighted to continue our support for the Isle of Man Sporting and Dining club. Following on from the success of speaker Kevin Keegan at the end of January, we are pleased to welcome another sporting icon and look to continue the event’s success in fundraising for local charities.”

John Wannenburgh of the IoM Sporting and Dining Club added:

“Bernard’s accomplishments in the sport of golf are impressive and, as a leading media commentator for BBC Radio Five Live, Bernard’s speaking capacity is impressive. We look forward to hearing informative insights and no doubt some witty anecdotes about the world’s biggest golf event from one of Europe’s most successful players and captains.”

The event will take place on 25th April 2013 at the Best Western Palace Hotel and Casino in Douglas, with dinner tickets costing ?60 for members and ?75 for non-members (excluding VAT), available by contacting the Club on 07624 495749 or at john@sportinganddiningclub.com.
