Landlord registration scheme moves a step closer

by isleofman.com 7th February 2013

The Island's first compulsory registration scheme for private housing landlords has moved a step forward.

A bill drawn up by the Department of Social Care to ensure basic minimum standards in thousands of rented properties will begin its passage through the Keys this spring.

A public consultation's been launched on the proposals and, in the meantime, landlords are being urged to sign up to a voluntary registration scheme.

The bill would allow the department to enforce minimum standards and give tenants whose landlords refuse to upgrade shoddy accommodation official recourse for the first time.

Minister Chris Robertshaw: (play audio)

You can view the bill on the department's website: gov.im/socialcare/consultations.gov

And you can email your views to landlord.registration@gov.im
