The Southern Befrienders charity has been given two mobile phones by Manx Telecom to help volunteers and service users. The charity provides home visits through a group of volunteer befrienders who call in on elderly people in the south of the Island. The two rugged Samsung mobile phones donated by the telecoms company will be very useful, says Lorna Trevethan, Southern Befrienders Scheme Co-ordinator. She added:
“We are delighted that Manx Telecom has been able to donate these two mobile phones to our organisation. The mobiles will be invaluable to both myself and Assistant Coordinator Debbie Lowe as we spend a lot of time out of the office, and having reliable mobiles means that our volunteers and service users can contact us when they need us, rather than having to leave messages, especially when a quick response is required. The phones will also be available to volunteers should they need them on any visits or events. Through this donation Southern Befrienders is able to direct funds to schemes and activities that directly benefit the elderly in the south of the Island.”
Voirrey Barron, Marketing Communications Manager, said the company was delighted to support the charity’s work which has benefitted many elderly people since it was set up in 2005. Southern Befrienders was set up to assist the elderly in the south of the Island who may be experiencing feelings of isolation and loneliness, and is based at Thie Rosien, Castletown Road, Port Erin.
