The Manx Electric Railway will be powering up and rolling out for its 2013 service on Saturday 9th March, just before Mother’s Day and over a week earlier than last year.
2013 is a very important year for the Manx Electric Railway; Saturday 7th September will be the 120th Anniversary since the official opening tram travelled from Derby Castle to Groudle Glen.
The Manx Electric Railway is unique, consisting of a number of open and closed tram cars and trailers, including trams No.1 and 2, which date from 1893 and are in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest operational tramcars still in service anywhere in the world. Still powered by the mysterious Mercury Arc Rectifier, this Victorian tramway runs a regular service from March to November, with trams up to every 30 minutes in the summer as well as an evening tram service.
On the 9th March, trams will depart Derby Castle (Douglas) at: 09:40, 11:10, 12:40 and 14:40. Trams will also depart Ramsey at 11:10, 12:40, 14:40 and 16:10.
If you’re not treating mum to a trip on the tram for Mother’s Day, why not say ‘Thanks Mum’ and treat her to a special Sunday lunch or afternoon tea option on the steam railway, details of which can be found at
