A Peel fisherman has been fined ?3,000 for taking under-sized scallops from Manx seas.

Robert Parton's boat Benolas was stopped by the fisheries protection vessel Barrule last week and detained when officers found his catch contained queenies below the legal minimum size.

Parton pleaded guilty when he appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jane Hughes on Friday to the offence of retaining scallops below the permitted size, a minimum of 110mm.

Patrol officers on the Barrule boarded his fishing boat almost three miles north of Maughold Head last Thursday, and after inspecting his catch, escorted his vessel to Douglas harbour where it was detained.

As well as the ?3,000 fine the skipper was ordered to pay costs.

Member for Fisheries Kate Beecroft MHK said Parton's convcition sent a clear message to other skippers operating in Manx territorial waters they must abide by the rules to ensure a viable fishery for all in future.

And DEFA minister Phil Gawne confirmed the department would enforce its conservation measures and not allow individuals to flout the rules.
