A Cronk y Berry School pupil won a competition to devise a new slogan for the Isle of Man’s Commonwealth Games team. Eleven-year-old Emma Hawke’s slogan ‘Together we’ll make our Island proud’ was chosen from more than 100 entries in the competition open to schools across the Island. Emma won ?50 in gift vouchers and another ?50 for her school. TT star and Team Isle of Man Ambassador Conor Cummins presented her with the prize at a special assembly organised by the school to honour her achievement. The competition was judged by a panel including Tim Crookall MHK, Minister for Education and Children, Chris Till, Marketing Director of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association, Team Isle of Man Ambassadors Marie Morgan and Neil MacGregor, and a representative from marketing and communications company MM&C which is working to promote IoM CGA and Team Isle of Man. Juliet Holt, President of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association, said:
“Emma’s slogan captures the sense of national pride that the whole Island feels for our Commonwealth Games team, and also reflects the community spirit which is so important in supporting competitors in the build-up to the Games. The Association would like to express its thanks to Emma and all of the pupils and school staff who put so much hard work into taking part in the slogan competition.”
Emma’s slogan will be used in conjunction with a new Team Isle of Man logo which will be unveiled in the next few weeks. Cronk y Berry School headteacher Rob Sellors commented:
“We are thrilled that Emma has won this award as it will help promote the importance of the Commonwealth Games for both the school and our Island as a whole. Emma's success with this competition is very fitting as she is a very keen sportswoman herself, regularly representing the school in fencing competitions. The school are delighted to celebrate this very important event and look forward to being involved in learning more about the Games over the next year.”
The next Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow between July 23 and August 3, 2014. The team that the Isle of Man sends to the Games depends upon public support for fundraising events organised by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association which is a registered charity. The organisation is responsible for the publicity, fundraising, travel and support for Team Isle of Man’s participation at the Commonwealth Games.
