On Wednesday 13th March, the Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education hosts this year’s annual Health Fayre, with the theme of ‘looking after the whole you’. College students, young people and the general public will have an opportunity to find out about healthy choices and local support agencies.
The wide range of topics to be addressed by the thirty 30-plus voluntary and statutory agencies attending includes: fitness tips from the NSC; guidance on managing stress from the Psychological Therapies Service; support for, and information about, eating disorders with the Manx Eating Disorders Awareness Group and information about the impact of food and drink on diabetes. Local charities including Cruse Bereavement Care, Samaritans, DASH, Crossroads Young Carers, Motiv8, Gamcare and Relate will be on hand to discuss their various support services. Bowel Cancer Isle of Man is bringing a walk-through colon to raise awareness about bowel cancer and other diseases of the large intestine and Macmillan Cancer Information Centre will be available for support for anyone affected by cancer.
Treatments, including back and Indian head massage, hopi ear candles, manicures, face mapping, brow bar, hair-cuts and ‘hair-ups’ will be provided by College Hairdressing and Beauty students.
Local reiki practitioners will be offering 20-minute, stress-busting treatments.
Anne Gundry, Head of Student Services at the College, said: ‘We are delighted so many local agencies have agreed to attend the Fayre and provide information on topics which are of real relevance to young people in their everyday lives. Contributors will present information in an easy to understand, interactive, informative and fun way. Between them they will address the full meaning of health – physical, emotional and mental well being.’
The Fayre will be opened by Dudley Butt, MLC, a Member of the Department of Health, at 9.15am and the Fayre will run until 1pm. A programme of activities will be available at the College reception.
