Beasts of the Southern Wild, by independent filmmaker and writer-director Benh Zeitlin, is set in a place known as the Bathtub, a remote stretch of the Louisiana bayou profoundly cut off from the rest of modern civilization. Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, whose tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he is no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of kilter, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink's health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother. It is a film full of wonder, disorder and fantastical moments lived out in the imagination of six year old Hushpuppy who says, "The entire world depends on everything fitting together just right."
Zeitlin worked with a cast and crew of mostly non-professionals (both Hushpuppy played by Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis and Dwight Henry who plays her father, make genuinely astonishing screen debuts). The creative success of this independent film is evident in the number of nominations for major awards including 4 Oscars.
