Find out about PrisonWorks

by isleofman.com 5th March 2013
PrisonWorks will be hosting an information hour at St. Andrew's Church, Glencrutchery Road on Tuesday 12th March from 7.30pm - 8.30pm.

PrisonWorks is a registered Isle of Man charity that runs a number of programmes both within and outside our prison for the benefit of prisoners and their families.

"Christmas Angel" assists prisoners in choosing and buying Christmas presents for their children, accompanied by a hand-written note from them to their child.  This helps prisoners maintain a more personal contact with their families.  PrisonWorks now operates in conjunction with a number of other groups and charities on the island and has helped to put together Christmas Hampers for the needy of the island.  They assist with Family Days by photographing families enjoying their time together and presenting each parent and child with their own photobook keepsake of the day.  They have also started a Spanish language class and are keen to offer further educational classes and other innovative ways to equip prisoners for a useful and productive life 'on the outside.'

"Sycamore Tree" is a Restorative Justice programme developed to raise awareness among offenders of the effects of crime on victims, the offender's family and the community, and to help them take personal responsibility for their actions.  The island version of this programme is called "Inside Out" and, at present, the 6th course is being presented by PrisonWorks in the prison.  To date, 25 offenders have elected to take part in these courses.  They are now hoping to extend this programme to "On the Outside", in which they plan to form a team of mentors in various areas of the island.  Ex-offenders, or those at risk of offending, can be asssigned to a team where they live, to support them in making the choices and doing the things that will keep them from offending or re-offending.

Anyone interested in finding out more about this amazing and worthwhile charity, without obligation, are invited to go along to the Information Hour at St. Andrew's Church on 12th March and learn more about the work they are doing in our community.  More information can be found at PrisonWorks@pw-isleofman.im.
