by isleofman.com 6th March 2013

One of the most famous ships to have been built in Ramsey shipyard has become the subject of an art competition organised by Ramsey Town Commissioners.

The competition is to mark the 150th anniversary of the Star of India, launched from Ramsey on November 14th 1863 as the Euterpe, her name changed in 1906 after the ship was sold to US firm Alaska Packers all of whose fleet had names prefixed with ‘Star’.

Launching the competition Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Captain Nigel Malpass said: ‘Ramsey’s association with this famous ship endures to this day. The history of the Star of India is one of many fascinating stories. This competition provides opportunities to recount some of those stories in new and creative ways.’

Photographers and artists are invited to submit their work and the competition is open to entrants in two categories, adults and under-16s.

Artists must produce a colour painting depicting the Star of India at any location she has visited, such as New Zealand, India or Chile. The judges have determined they will be looking for imaginative interpretations that go beyond the conventional.

Only one painting per entry will be accepted. Closing date for entries, October 9th, 2013.

Photographers are required to submit a colour photograph of the ship taken since January 1st 1993.

Up to three photographs per entry will be accepted.  Closing date for entries, November 6th 2013.

Adult prizes for both competitions are ?100 for first prize, ?50 for the runner-up. Junior (under-16s): ?50 first prize, ?25 runner-up.

Full details and entry forms are available on the Commissioners’ website, ramsey.gov.im, from Ramsey town hall and from selected retail outlets in the town.

The town’s two primary schools will also have an opportunity to demonstrate their artistic talents and celebrate the anniversary after the Commissioners organised a painting competition for Scoill Ree Gorree and Auldyn School.
