New Pope was shock appointment says local church leader

The head of the Roman Catholic Church in the Island says the appointment of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as the new Pope shocked many onlookers.

Canon Philip Gillespie from St Mary's Church in Douglas was an interested observer as the election of Pope Francis was confirmed.

The new Pontiff has begun his first day at the helm and is expected to lead cardinals in his first Mass later today.

Canon Gillespie said his opening public address made compelling viewing.
