Ten junior schools will be participating in the island wide annual public speaking competition sponsored by the Rotary Club of Douglas.
The Rotary Club’s Youth Opportunities Committee works in partnership with the Department of Education and Children to encourage schools to enter a team in this annual competition which gives children the chance to develop and demonstrate their skills in public speaking. Many schools hold an internal competition first to decide who will represent the school in the island wide event , so when it comes to the final those attending hear the best of a large pool of talent. This year will be a particularly tough choice for the judges and an entertaining and thought provoking evening for the audience with subjects ranging from “Why my homework is never on time?“ to “Why we shouldn’t take nature for granted“.
Andrew Swithinbank, leading the Rotary group organising the event, said:
“ The Rotary, whose motto is Service above Self, is committed to encouraging and celebrating the abilities of young people and helping them to prepare for the future. As presentation and communication are important life skills we are delighted so many junior schools have taken the opportunity to help their pupils develop the confidence to speak well in public."
The winning school will receive a cheque from the Rotary for ?750 and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize teams will receive book tokens... and the admiration of their parents, teachers and friends.
The winning school last year Arbory will be hosting the event at Ballabeg on Monday 18th March at 6pm.
Rotary president Bob Dowty Jnr, and teachers from winning school in last year’s secondary competition - Castle Rushen High School -will judge.
