Statement on the inquest into the death of Christopher Burrows

Following today’s verdict concerning the inquest into the death of Christopher Burrows, on behalf of all concerned the Department of Health wishes to extend its deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to Christopher’s mother and family.
 
The Department, and in particular, the Mental Health Service await the inquest transcript which includes the eight recommendations made by the Coroner.  Prompt and robust scrutiny will be given to the key learning points and full consideration given to how processes, practices and procedures may be improved.
 
The Department is committed to developing the quality of service provision wherever possible.  Senior management acknowledges the complexity and importance of mental health provision and gives an assurance that a comprehensive action plan relating to this matter will be drawn up.
