Sponsor confirmed for Tower of Refuge walk

by isleofman.com 22nd March 2013

The 2013 Tower of Refuge walk is to be sponsored by Tower Insurance for the second year in succession, event organiser Douglas Development Partnership has confirmed.

The event, which last year saw more than 2000 people join the escorted walk out to Conister Rock, will take place on Friday April 26th and is set to be ‘bigger and better’, said development manager Chris Pycroft.

‘Last year’s walk was a runaway success and afterwards we were inundated with enquiries about when it would be held again. We are delighted therefore that Tower Insurance has generously agreed to be sponsor once again for what looks set to become one of the major events in the town’s social calendar. Tower’s support has not only helped make the walk a major community event but it also means that the charity which has such close connections with the Tower of Refuge, the RNLI, will benefit.’

Tower Insurance managing director Peter Gallagher said: ‘The Tower Insurance brand, the Tower of Refuge and the RNLI all share a common purpose, protection. We are therefore pleased to sponsor, for the second year in succession, this inspirational community-led event that has clearly captured the hearts and minds of so many people of all ages.’

Mr Pycroft continued: ‘The Tower of Refuge walk is part of a programme of events planned over the coming months to help the town centre reclaim its role at the heart of the community and make it a vibrant social destination not only for retail, but also for leisure and cultural activities.’

He added: ‘Keep an eye on our Facebook page Douglas Town Centre Management where, if you sign up for the walk, you might even receive some VIP treatment on the night.  Of course you need to come prepared, and that means wellies, so there’ll be spot prizes for the fanciest footwear, too.’

The event is open to all ages, although under-16s must be accompanied by an adult. Suitable clothing and footwear must be worn and instructions by the coastguards and stewards followed at all times.

Subject to weather and tide conditions the walk out to the Tower of Refuge is expected to begin at approximately 5.45pm returning by 8.15pm.
