Driving Licence exchange agreements made with Canada

by isleofman.com 28th March 2013

The Department of Infrastructure is pleased to announce that it has reached agreement with all Canadian Provinces and Territories who will now accept an Isle of Man driving licence for exchange purposes.

The Isle of Man has for many years accepted Canadian driving licences for exchange when a Canadian national becomes a resident of the Isle of Man, however historically Canadian Provinces and Territories did not recognise Isle of Man licences for exchange and Manx residents moving to work and live in Canada had to take a driving test to obtain a Canadian driving licence.

Over the last 2 years the Department of Infrastructure has contacted all 10 Provinces and 3 Territories, all of whom have their own driving licence regulations, and signed Memorandum of Agreement with them on mutual exchange of driving licences.

The Provinces and Territories are as follows: -

Provinces
Alberta
British Columbia
Manitoba
New Brunswick
Newfoundland and Labrador
Nova Scotia
Ontario
Prince Edward Island
Quebec
Saskatchewan

Territories
Northwest Territory
Nanavut
Yukon

All the agreements with the Provinces and Territories will accept a qualification to drive a car but may not accept a motorcycle or heavy goods vehicle qualification without additional testing and all exchange licences will be subject to examination as to medical fitness to drive.
