Salon 3 trainees highlight their skills in Island-wide competition

by isleofman.com 2nd April 2013

Salon 3 trainees showcased the results of the serious investment being made in their future careers recently at an Island-wide competition organised by Isle of Man College.
The annual ‘Hair and Beauty’ contest allowed the company’s three trainees, Will Smith, Jessica Bryan and Olivia Cooke, who are also Hairdressing students at the College, the chance to demonstrate their skills and eye for style, and show off what they have learned during their studies so far.

Will and Jessica took part in the ‘Total Look’ contest, recreating the looks of Lady Gaga (complete with raw meat, Police tape and Diet Coke cans!) and Johnny Depp’s ‘Mad Hatter’ respectively. First-year student Jessica, 18, only began her training in September 2012 and her ability to participate in this prestigious competition in such a short space of time, and against more experienced stylists, is testament to her dedication and the glittering career ahead of her.

The trio also took part in the blow-dry contest, and Will and Olivia the cutting and colouring contest, with 19-year old Will creating a striking, blunt-cut turquoise bob for his model who previously had long, dark hair. Competing against the clock, they had 45 minutes to create their cut or look from scratch before showing it off to the panel of judges from the UK.

As well as studying once a week at the College, the trio also undertake a strict programme of training organised by Salon 3’s Creative Directors Janet Lancaster and Yvonne Karran, and their experienced team of stylists. This comprises precision cutting and colour techniques, colour corrections, dressing and styling, blow-drying and hair-ups. They also study under a large number of world-famous guest trainers who Salon 3 bring to the Island on a regular basis.

Salon 3 is the Island’s leading training salon, and in April and May it is introducing a new two-part course on ‘Dressing Hair, Hair-Up and Bridal Hair’ where its award-winning staff will train stylists from other hairdressing businesses around the Island to save them the expense of having to go to the UK to train. There are now just a few places left on this course.

Yvonne Karran, Creative Director at Salon 3 commented: “The annual College competition is always very nerve-wracking for the contestants but we encourage our Salon 3 trainees to enter because of the huge benefits it gives them including confidence, the ability to think and act quickly, a broad perspective on creating a total look for their client which includes their hair, make-up and clothing, and their creativity. It puts them out of their comfort zone and forces them to think outside of the box which is a really important life skill to have, especially working in a busy salon!

“Will, Jessica and Olivia spent months developing their ideas in Salon 3 through our academy training programme designed especially for them, and we couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved!”

To book one of the last few places on Salon 3’s two-part on ‘Dressing Hair, Hair-Up and Bridal Hair’ course or ask Creative Director, Janet Lancaster, any questions please email salon3@manx.net or call 616263.
