The Manx Diabetic Group is backing a major campaign designed to prevent children from becoming seriously ill.
The ‘4 Ts’ campaign is aimed at parents and flags up the symptoms of type 1 diabetes, which can be life-threatening if undiagnosed.
Chairman of the Manx Diabetic Group Bev Michelson said: ‘According to Diabetes UK, as many as one in four children and young people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when they are already in diabetic ketoacidosis, which requires urgent medical attention. Remembering four simple symptoms could stop a child from becoming dangerously ill.’
The four Ts stand for toilet, thirsty, tired and thinner and children who exhibit any of these symptoms should be taken to their GP immediately for a test. Children and young people who are diagnosed quickly and receive early treatment can avoid the dangers of diabetic ketoacidosis. All it takes is a simple finger-prick blood test.
The Manx Diabetic Group is distributing the colourful 4 Ts poster around the local community. Parents can find out more by going online – visit www.diabetes.org.uk/The4Ts.
