Victorian Society to give talk on "The Star of India"

by isleofman.com 15th April 2013
The most famous ship to ever be launched from Ramsey Shipyard is undoubtedly The Star of India which entered the waters of the northern harbour as the ‘Euterpe’ 150 years ago this year.

The ship is famous as being the world’s oldest iron-hulled merchant ship still afloat and sailing in the waters around San Diego. Events are being planned in Ramsey to celebrate the anniversary in November, but the IOM Victorian Society are having an illustrated talk by their Vice Chairman, Bob Stimpson, on Friday 26th April at St. Ninian’s School, starting at 8pm.

Bob is the author of the definitive reference book on William Kennish the Manx inventor, and when a speaker on the Star of India could not be found, Bob readily agreed to research the history of the ship and put together the presentation. The meeting is open to the public at a nominal charge of ?1.00.

Those attending should use the Somerset Road entrance to the lecture theatre.
