Going for growth: Council provides more allotments

by isleofman.com 18th April 2013

Douglas Borough Council has completed its second and final phase of allotments.

45 additional allotments have been created at the Council-owned site on Johnny Watterson’s Lane, swelling the number of plots to 72.

Launched in 2010 the scheme proved an instant success with demand exceeding supply, a situation that continues, with all second-phase plots now allocated.

Regeneration and community advisory committee lead member Councillor Stephen Pitts said: ‘The Council’s allotment scheme attracted overwhelming interest from day one. Clearly we have tapped into the resurgence in “grow your own” and healthy living. Not only will tenants be able to enjoy the freshest vegetables and fruit, but they will also be automatically entered into the Best Allotment category in our annual Douglas in Bloom competition. And, from a broader perspective, the scheme is not only a practical demonstration of community interaction but also a valuable urban resource.’
