The Albany/Nedgroup Junior Open commenced on Saturday with the Red and Orange ball competition. Sponsored by Nedgroup International (Isle of Man) Ltd this is the start of the junior competition season.

Results so far- Mixed U8 (red ball) r/r – group A winner Jayden Go, 2nd Sophie Sheard; Group B winner Harry McAleer, 2nd Thomas Reed; group C winner James Weight, 2nd Maddie Butterworth. Semi finals – Jayden bt Maddie 10-3, Harry bt James 10-8; Final Jayden bt Harry 10-6. Mixed U9 (orange ball) – Q.F. Zac Walker bt Tyler Hannay 5/3; Sam Skelcher-Maxwell bt Finn Hill 4/1; Jack Christian bt Jayden Go 4/4 (11-9); Roch Mirski bt Kitty Thomas 4/1. S/f Zac bt Sam 4/2 Roch bt Jack 4/0. Final Zac bt Roch 4/4 (15/13). Consolation matches–Tyler Hannay bt Finn Hill 4/1; Jayden Go bt Kitty Thomas 4/1; Final Tyler bt Jayden 4/2.

The players were so keen to carry on playing that another round of matches was played. Finn bt Kitty 4/0; Sam bt Jack 4/0; Tyler bt Jayden 4/2;Zac bt Finn 4/1.

Play continues throughout the week with finals on Saturday. Sponsors cheque and prize presentation by Peter Barradell on behalf of the sponsors, will be approximately 4pm, followed by the usual finals day tea. There is an appeal by the committee for contributions of sandwiches and cakes. All competitors who have prizes to collect should be at the club by 3.30pm or earlier if they want to watch the remaining finals.  Thank you to the club’s tournament convenor, Sally Walker and her helpers in running the event so efficiently.

Mini Tennis coaching will only be held this Saturday (20) for the 12 and 1pm Red sessionsonly. After that there are Nedgroup finals.There are 6 or 7 places available for newcomers at that time and they can have two free sessions, before being invited to join the flourishing Albany Mini Tennis programme, currently sponsored by PPP but soon to announce a new sponsor. Members please note the IOMLTA leagues start next week with Albany Women’s A at home to Castletown  on Monday. All home matches start at 7pm.  Men’s B team play on Tuesday v Castletown AThe first Men’s home match will be our Aon Thursday v Ramsey A. A full list of all home fixtures is displayed at the club so that members know when the outdoor courts aren’t available. All matches, except Albany C team require all three courts but only two courts are used for the C team matches. It’s hoped that some members might go along and watch some of the matches. The full fixture list will be on the club website and Facebook.
