Could you live on ?1 day? That’s the challenge during Live Below the Line week starting 29th April 2013 when local people are encouraged to find out what life is like for some of the 1.4bn people around the world in extreme poverty.
Backing the campaign this year are five staff from the Manx Co-operative Society: Operations Manager Andrew Corrie, store managers Darren Lowe from Duke St, Douglas, Deirdre McElroy from Port Erin and John Slevin from Ramsey plus Area Trainer Sarah Thompson.
They will join a number of other Manx residents, including Bishop Robert Patterson and Department of the Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne, trying to survive for five days on a spend of only ?1 per day on food and drink.
The challenge seeks to highlight the inequality in the world and the fact that while the world produces enough food for everyone, millions of people go to bed hungry every night.
Manx Co-operative Operations Manager Andrew Corrie says, “It certainly won’t be an easy challenge, especially for those of us who are surrounded by food all day long! But we are really keen to do our bit to raise awareness locally of what is a massive problem for so many people around the world.”
The Manx Co-operative is putting together a potential shopping list for people who want to take up the challenge, based on a total ?20 spend for four people over the five days. Copies of this will be available in the Manx Co-operative stores.
The Live Below the Line challenge is part of the Global Poverty Project, and is supported on the Island by the One World Centre whose director Rosemary Clarke will also be taking part.
