Bishop speaks out over church row

The Island's bishop has spoken out in the row over a parish priest appointment - which has seen a former lieutenant governor resign from long-held positioins in the church.

Bishop Robert has defended a selection panel's decision not to appoint Reverend Robert Ferguson as vicar of St Matthew's in Douglas.

Former governor Sir Laurence New resigned as church warden and licensed preacher there in protest.

He later issued a broadside against Bishop Robert, accusing him of riding roughshod over the wishes of the parish.

Bishop Robert has accused Sir Laurence of breaking confidentiality rules.

He says he formed an interview panel, including Sir Laurence, even though he didn't have to to include parish views:
