Efforts to combat alcohol misuse in the Isle of Man are being supported by the distribution of leaflets encouraging sensible drinking.
‘Enjoy a drink: know your limits’ contains information about recommended alcohol consumption, health risks and safety advice, as well as a guide to the number of units in different types of drinks.
The leaflets, sponsored by Crimestoppers, have been produced by Public Health in conjunction with Offwatch, the organisation which represents members of the local off-licence trade.
Copies will be available at venues throughout the Island, including all off-licence premises as part of the Offwatch voluntary code of conduct.
Dr Paul Emerson, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, said: ‘Alcohol misuse is a significant public health problem in the Isle of Man. It can cause physical and mental health problems for individuals and their families, and also affects workplace productivity. In addition, misuse is associated with criminal and dangerous behaviour such as drink driving.’
He added: ‘Public Health is pleased to have co-produced this leaflet with Crimestoppers and Offwatch and hope it proves useful in contributing to the sensible use of alcohol in the Island. In particular, we wish to advise mums-to-be to avoid drinking any alcohol during pregnancy, especially in the first three to four months, as it can cause significant harm to unborn babies.’
A total of 15,000 copies of ‘Enjoy a drink: know your limits’ have been printed as part of the overall support and advice available on alcohol-related issues. Crimestoppers has sponsored the printing costs to assist the drive to reduce crime in the Island.
Stuart McCudden, Chairman of Crimestoppers Isle of Man, said: ‘Whilst Crimestoppers is primarily focused on the anonymous reporting of crime we also feel it is important to assist in educating the community as to the causes of crime. We are pleased to support this proactive approach to crime reduction considering a lot of crime is drink related’.
Peter Karran MHK, Member of the Department of Home Affairs with responsibility for the Drug and Alcohol Strategy, said: ‘These leaflets form an import part of the drive to promote sensible drinking habits in the Island and I’d like to thank Crimestoppers and Offwatch for their support. Misuse of alcohol can have a devastating impact on families and place an additional burden on our emergency services. I would encourage people to take a few minutes to read this leaflet and take on board the valuable information and guidance.’
