Douglas Development Partnership is taking, quite literally, steps to strengthening community ties by co-partnering with Barclays on May 6th when the Isle of Man attempts to regain its rightful position as world record holder for the largest three-legged race.
Development manager Chris Pycroft said: ‘Although it’s held currently by Japan, this is one title that should always be owned by the Isle of Man. It effectively has our name on it.
‘We’re urging as many people as possible to help return what rightfully belongs to this island, the Guinness world record for the largest number of pairs in a three-legged race, last held by the Isle of Man in 2009.
‘It’s not just about regaining a title, though, it’s about joining in what promises to be a great family fun-packed event that will help raise funds for The Children’s Centre.
‘In recent years the Partnership has been driving the revival of Douglas town centre as a year-round social and leisure space for a whole variety of community events. Similarly Douglas beach offers tremendous potential for hosting all kinds of activities. And the beach is ideal for this three-legged race bid; at least should anyone stumble or fall the sand will provide a soft landing.’
Town centre manager Michelle O’Malley added: ‘The race will start at the northern of the beach and be accompanied by a wide range of attractions on Douglas promenade, including live music and food outlets. There’s definitely going to be a festival atmosphere throughout the day, from 11am to 5pm, so even for those who don’t feel inclined to pair up there are still plenty of reasons to turn up.’
