by isleofman.com 24th April 2013

Onchan-born author Bob Kermeen is to give a talk on Monday May 20th at the Henry Bloom Noble Library on the background to his latest novel, Bin Laden’s Nemesis.

His talk will cover the ideas of the plot, the choice of characters, the research necessary when writing a factual based fictional work, and the importance of the first and last chapters.

Mr Kermeen, who writes under the pseudonym R.W Kay, was educated at Murray’s Road School, Douglas High School for Boys and Castle Rushen High School.  After leaving university he taught for three years, two at Ramsey Grammar School, before joining the RAF Education Branch in 1966. He served for 29 years on the active list during which time he gained a Master of Science degree in operational research and specialised in software engineering. For his expertise in war gaming he was awarded a fellowship of the British Computer Society. He retired as a wing commander in 1995 but retained his rank as a retired officer to become the senior RAF recruiting officer in the North West of England for 10 years. Married with three grown-up children, he now lives in east Cheshire.

Bin Laden’s Nemesis, the second in a trilogy, is set against a background of the IRA peace process in 1990 and the story tells of suspected weapons exchanges between Irish and Spanish trawlers in the Isle of Man and a Manxman, John Quayle, recruited by the MI5 to infiltrate al-Qaeda.

Tickets for Mr Kermeen’s talk, which starts at 7.30pm, are free but must be collected in advance from the library’s ground-floor counter.

The Henry Bloom Noble Library, 10-12 Victoria Street, Douglas. Telephone 696461.
