Isle of Man Arts Council has appointed Manx Radio as its official radio media partner for its 2014 ‘Island of Culture’ celebrations.

‘Island of Culture 2014’ will be the largest celebration of culture and the arts in the Isle of Man’s history, and will showcase the huge array of talent there is across all walks of Manx life. A series of events are being planned throughout the year to help Manx residents engage with the arts and encourage participation, particularly from young people. These will cover things like dance, music, theatre, art, film, literature and national history and culture.

In addition, a series of high profile guests will visit the Isle of Man next year as part of the ‘Island of Culture’ celebrations including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Activity will also focus on significant Manx cultural landmarks including the 150th birthday of the artist, Archibald Knox.
Manx Radio, the Island’s national broadcaster, proudly supports more local events and charities than any other media outlet. It is the only radio station which can bring events to listeners through the power of live outside broadcasting, and in 2008 established its own charity, the Dream Catcher Appeal, to help support the work of other Manx charities and provide them with vital equipment.

It will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2014.

Michael Lees, Committee Member of the Isle of Man Arts Council and Event Director of Island of Culture, commented: “Manx Radio has the ability to bring to life a large number of cultural events that take place around the Island thanks to its Outside Broadcast facility. It already supports a huge range of community, arts and specific interest events for people of all ages across the Island, and will increase this commitment in 2014 as part of its own celebrations. Island of Culture is something for everyone to participant in and enjoy, and so we feel they are the best partner for us to work with to open up the programme to the residents of the Isle of Man.”

John Marsom, Business Director of Manx Radio, commented: “Being appointed as the Arts Council’s ‘Island of Culture’ official radio media partner for next year is particularly apt given that in 2014, Manx Radio celebrates its 50th anniversary. Since the launch of Manx Radio in 1964, supporting the Island’s arts, performing arts and culture has been at the heart of our broadcasting, and we look forward to bringing to air the incredible array of talent the Island has to offer and promoting this to a national audience next year.”
