Landmark event helps raise funds for RNLI

by isleofman.com 2nd May 2013

An estimated 2,800 people took part in the second escorted Tower Insurance Tower of Refuge walk.

The event on April 26th, organised by Douglas Development Partnership and sponsored by Tower Insurance, also raised around ?2,500 for the RNLI.

Development manager Chris Pycroft said: ‘We first held the walk in 2012 and it was a tremendous success that prompted many enquiries about when it would be repeated. Thanks to generous sponsorship for the second year in succession from Tower Insurance the walk was able to go ahead again, generating even greater interest and raising money for a charity that’s been associated with the Isle of Man and the Tower of Refuge itself since the early 1800s.

‘Judging by the crowds this Douglas landmark clearly continues to exert a fascination among every generation and the event is becoming very much a family occasion.

‘We would hope to hold the walk again at some point when we would urge Douglas businesses, particularly restaurants, cafes and takeaway providers, to get behind the event and seize the opportunity to benefit from the thousands of potential customers this event has the power to attract.

‘As has always been the Partnership’s intention, the Tower of Refuge walk brings added life and colour to two of the town’s greatest assets, the beach and the promenade. They will also be the setting for the three-legged race on May 6th when we hope people will turn up and pair up in their thousands to ensure the Isle of Man regains its rightful position as world record holder.’

For the three-legged race registration is ?5 per pair with proceeds going to The Children’s Centre. For details and to register, visit threelegs.im.
