Fair Trade Island Group supports Dhaka campaign for change

by isleofman.com 3rd May 2013

In response to the recent collapse of an eight-storey building in Dhaka that killed over 500 garment workers and left many more unaccounted for, the Fair Trade Island Group is supporting a campaign that aims to prevent such a thing happening again.

The online petition at change.org calls on Primark, Matalan, Mango and Bonmarche to ensure safety for workers and to provide compensation and support for everyone affected by the building’s collapse.

“The tragedy in Dhaka is a stark illustration of the human costs involved in cheap, fast fashion,” said Leni Lewis of the Fair Trade Island Group. “Fair trade is a business model that addresses these problems by making sure workers get a fair wage and safe working conditions. As consumers we have the power to change the way big retailers do business. We simply need to vote with our wallets, refusing to buy from brands that exploit people for profit and instead supporting the companies that treat people fairly right across the supply chain.”
