At approximately 20.30 hrs on Friday 3rd May crews from Douglas Fire Station were dispatched to assist an ambulance crew who were attending an incident on Westmoreland Road where a child had fallen from a car park and impaled himself on a metal bar.
Upon their arrival crews discovered a 9 year old boy who had fallen approximately 12 feet from a car park and had landed in a confined space between the car park and a steep embankment. As a result of the fall the boy had impaled himself on a section of rebar which was sticking out of the ground. The boy was already receiving medical treatment from paramedics however the boy was unable to be moved due to his leg being impaled on the rebar.
Fire crews used hydraulic cutters to cut away a number of rebar before finally cutting the section which the boy was impaled on. A short section of the rebar was left in the child’s leg and was removed later at hospital. Crews used specialist line rescue techniques along with a basket stretcher to bring the casualty up a steep incline and back on to ground level where he was transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken to Nobles Hospital for further treatment.
It is not thought that the child’s injuries are life threatening.
Crews left the scene at 21.51hrs.
