Volunteers brave the weather at start of "Big TT Tidy Up" which continues tonight

Despite appalling weather and torrential rain, the Isle of Man’s “Big One TT Tidy Up” campaign started yesterday (Sunday 12th May) when a group of hardy volunteers tackled one of the Island’s biggest beachside problems - at Langness.

“We didn’t expect anyone to turn up in the conditions,” said Beach Buddies organiser Bill Dale, “but we still had eleven volunteers, all of which were absolutely drenched to the skin afterwards.

“I cannot express how much their wonderful efforts were appreciated.  We cleared a large section of the beach, but the task at Langness is a huge one, and we will definitely be going back there regularly in the months to come.”

Huge quantities of fishing rope, nets and fishing gear were amongst 22 bags of rubbish removed from the beach, and it became obvious to the volunteers that Langness is one of the most badly polluted of the Isle of Man’s beaches.

Large amounts of rubbish can clearly be seen all over the area, which will be removed in the months to come. However, Beach Buddies are aware that Langness is a sensitive area for nesting seabirds, and will be advising volunteers not to start cleaning the area unless in an organised group.

The Beach Buddies “Big One TT Tidy Up” continues throughout this week.  Today’s event (Monday, May 13th) is being organised in conjunction with Braddan Commissioners who are giving their full support to the campaign.

This time volunteers will tackle a number of areas in Braddan Parish, including the Heritage Trail and TT Access Road. Meet at Braddan Bridge at 6.30pm. Litterpickers, gloves and bin bags will be provided and rubbish disposed afterwards by the Commissioners.
