Sleepwell Hotels Youth Cycling Tour Enjoys Record Attendance

by isleofman.com 14th May 2013

A record 311 rising young cyclists, including 250 UK and European riders, recently took part in the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth Cycling Tour, marking the hotel group’s 10th consecutive year of sponsorship of the prestigious event.

Spanning all three nights of the early May bank holiday weekend, the tour saw youth and junior road cyclists, friends, family, and support crews travel from Douglas and Onchan to Peel, Ramsey and Bride in a series of events, chalking up hundreds of kilometers in the process. Following a grueling weekend, 600 attendees were then treated to a Gala Dinner and awards ceremony at the Villa Marina on Sunday evening, courtesy of Sleepwell Group.

The Isle of Man Youth Tour constitutes the fourth round of the National Youth Circuit and the Junior Road Race Series and is considered to be the training ground for future cycling talent.  Mark Cavendish, MBE and Peter Kennaugh, MBE have each taken part over the course of their careers, whilst a 2006 winner, Jeste Bol, now rides for a Dutch pro team. This year’s event also featured young riders from Team GB’s elite development programme competing against the leading Manx, Dutch and UK stars.

Managing Director of Sleepwell Hotels, Mark Wilson, commented on the group’s sponsorship: “This year marks a decade of Sleepwell Hotels’ sponsorship of the tour and it has been very rewarding to see the event grow in popularity each year. The Island’s natural back-drop and prowess as a national cycling hub is quickly becoming evident on the global stage and it is important that we capitalise upon such event driven tourism assets wherever possible. Close to 2,000 bed nights were filled across the Island over the course of the Bank Holiday weekend while we ourselves played host to a group of senior British cycling officials as part of our sponsorship, providing an invaluable early season boost to Island tourism. Along with the organisers,  I would like to congratulate every one of the young cyclists who took part and also their dedicated support teams and families for helping to make this year’s tour a resounding success.”
